In Brief
MYOpera was established in 2010 in Toronto, ON. The company was founded when we realized that it was time to give Toronto’s talented young opera singers the opportunity to perform complete roles and be compensated for it. And so MYOpera was born.
Our company exists to create viable development opportunities for young artists in all fields related to the world of opera: singers, stage directors, music directors, and more.
In Depth
Toronto-born soprano Kate Applin is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University, holding both a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance and a Diploma in Operatic Performance.
After returning home from a summer spent training and facing her first year out of school, Kate realized that there were simply not enough opportunities for young, talented opera singers in Toronto. Summer training programs are crucial for development, but are very expensive and performance opportunities in the intervening months can be few and far between for a singer not in school.
Subsequent to this realization, Kate decided to self-produce a production of Così fan tutte in which she and other Young Artists could perform. It was her mandate to be able to pay each member of her cast and team for their work. Since 2010, the idea has blossomed fully into MYOpera, which has employed 19 unique singers, music directors and stage directors to date. To date, the company has mounted productions of Così fan tutte (2011), The Elixir of Love (2012), a rare Triple Bill of La serva padrona, Mavra, and Le magicien (2013), Hänsel & Gretel (2014) and Béatrice & Bénédict (2015). For its 2016 season, MYOperea will produce The Rape of Lucretia at the Aki Studio Theatre at Daniels Spectrum. Learn more about MYOpera’s upcoming season by clicking here.
