Company History
MYOpera was founded in 2010 in Toronto with a mission of empowering the artists and audiences of today to create the opera of tomorrow. We believe that opera is not just about preservation, but that the future of opera can be written by those that attend and perform it. Our company is designed to create formative professional experiences for emerging artists in all fields related to the world of opera: from singers, stage directors, and music directors, to lighting designers, stage managers, and more.
Imagine this…
Imagine yourself as a young artist. You’ve just graduated, or maybe you’re wrapping up school and are figuring out what comes next. You’re in debt from tuition, and are taking on more to attend a renowned summer program across the country. Between lessons, coachings, tuition, scores…it’s an expensive life, but you trust that it will be worth it in the end. You know that the road to singing in a prestigious opera house is a long one, but you also want to gain professional, paid experience. What company is going to take a chance on an unknown singer and give them their first break?
Enter MYOpera. This is the story of so many emerging artists, and it is the story of MYOpera’s founder, Kate Applin. In 2010, facing her first year out of school, Kate realized that there were simply not enough opportunities for the countless young, talented opera singers in Toronto. And so MYOpera was born with a commitment to giving its artists an unparalled experience and the freedom to expand their craft in a professional environment. In its six years, the company has worked with over 50 singers, music directors and stage directors, stage managers, lighting designers, and more.
